Everyone has their own style of traveling. Some people like to have a clear itinerary to follow so that they know what they will be doing and when they will be going it. Others prefer to play fast and loose, and simply go where they feel like going. If you’re someone who falls into the latter group, you can still find yourself unable to do exactly what you want to do during your travels. Leaving things until the last minute might offer you less choice, and not more. If you want to enjoy flexible travel where anything is possible, there are a few things that you should think about planning.
Consider Flexible Tickets
If you’re planning to get around by plane, bus, train or other transport, you might have one excellent option for flexible travel. Flexible tickets allow you to choose when and where you want to travel without having to book far in advance. They might come in the form of round-the-world plane tickets or hop-on-hop-off bus tickets. Sometimes you will still need to book before traveling, but it’s usually much easier than booking a specific trip. Other tickets might allow you to simply get on any bus or train that you want to, without having to book yourself a place.
Book Private Transportation
When a flexible ticket isn’t enough, there are other options to ensure you can keep your travel flexible. One of the best things you can do is book private transport so that you can decide where you go and where. It’s often worth paying more if you want to travel in style and have almost complete control too. Booking private jet charter flights to get where you need to be is a luxury option that can offer you almost complete flexibility. You can choose when and where you want to fly, whether you’re alone or you want to arrange something for a group. Or for another option, you can consider private car hire and have someone drive you to your next destination.
Take Control of Your Own Transportation
Perhaps you don’t want to rely on other people helping you to get around all the time. Instead, you can take control and have your own transport. Whether you drive your own car on your travels or you decide to hire one, it gives you the ultimate freedom. You can go where you like and decide when to go too. You can even consider other forms of transport, from other vehicles like motorbikes to hiring a boat for a sailing or canal trip. Having your own transport can often help you to get to places that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to access.
Stay in a Home, Not a Hotel
Hotels can provide everything for you if you want them too. The most expensive luxury hotels will wait on you hand and foot, delivering anything that you ask for. But if you want to be able to decide for yourself what you do and have complete freedom and independence, staying in a house or apartment is often the better idea. You can choose where you want to stay, often enjoying a broader range of places and not having to stick to more central locations if you’re in a city. You can come and go as you please, make your own food, and you don’t have to deal with other travelers.
Make Friends in High Places
Sometimes, if you want to be able to do whatever you want, it’s helpful if you know the right people. They can help to get you into a restaurant or bar, or call in a favor for you when you want to do something. Knowing the right people doesn’t always mean getting in with the rich and famous. It could just mean knowing someone local who knows the best places to go or is able to pull some strings for you.
Know When to Plan in Advance
When you want to have control over your travels, trying to be completely flexible with your plans doesn’t always work out. If you make decisions at the last minute, you can discover it’s too late to do what you want. Sometimes planning things in advance is the best way to ensure you get to experience your travels in the way that you want to. You don’t have to have a rigid itinerary, but it’s important to have some things arranged before you travel.
You can have complete control over your travels if you want it. Just think about how you want to experience your next trip. What are your ways of taking control over your travel? Which one of these tips would you try ? Please share with us in the comments below.

I think my husband and I are rather traditional travels. Airbnb has worked well, yet hotels just seem so dependable. I’m pinning this to give some thought for future travels – get out of our comfort zone a bit!
Such wonderful tips. We like to hire a private tour, if possible. It can be reasonable price-wise and a wonderful way to view a new city.
I’m definitely a plan in advance kind of person. I want to know where I’m going, staying, and when I’m going to get there. I don’t like the frenzy of trying to find something last minute which is the vacation lifestyle I had with my ex-husband. He didn’t like to plan anything in advance because he didn’t know when he was going to show up anywhere. Too much angst for me. I need to know where I’m going, but once I get somewhere, then I like it to flow instead being planned out.
Some really useful tips here.
