Everyone has a bucket list of some shape or form. It usually features things they hope to achieve in this life, things that truly help them feel alive, or help them feel satisfied in the person they have lived as. Often these include items and actions, such as ‘swim with dolphins,’ or ‘skydive before I’m forty.’ But, a much better use of this bucket list, or maybe one that can work just as well, is a bucket list which allows you the opportunity to explore the world around you and visit a wealth of wonderful places. Sometimes traveling closer to home can be more exciting than the usual itineraries that pop up in everyone else’s wishlist.
Many people want to visit the USA from around the world, and the ones who are lucky enough to live here are all too happy to only visit the states they are familiar with. The US offers such a range of beautiful experiences that it’s stunning to think of how anyone can do anything but wander its golden shorelines, meet its beautiful people, and experience everything it has to offer.
In the midst of my couch surfing travel search, I’d suggest that these following US states are some of the best to visit, ones that will give you that feeling of satisfaction long after you take the trip. They can also help you find a side to the US you probably don’t see as often if you’re concerned with the most ‘well-known’ cities.
Alabama
Alabama has been one of the most historically interesting states in the US. It was the birthplace of the American Civil Rights movement. Alabama introduced Mardi Gras to the world. It features some of the finest southern cuisines, and some of the best in rip-roaring parties. Taking a trip to the Best Western Plus Two Rivers Hotel & Suites Demopolis Alabama will serve as your launchpad, as living in rustic luxury is arguably the best way to experience this wonderful state. Not only are the best hospitality implements like food and drink are taken care of, but there are areas of outstanding natural beauty here, to the point where pinpointing one or two is difficult.
Taking a hike in the Dismals Canyon Conservatory should be high on your list, as seeing glow worms light up these gorgeous caverns can seem straight out of a fairy tale.However, Alabama is the rocket capital of the world, and the designs here to put the first man on the moon were achieved by those in Huntsville. You can be sure that a trip here will be unlike any other, and will drip with historical significance.
Nebraska
Nebraska is a gorgeous midwestern US state which houses within it the Great Plains and the Sandhills to name a few. Continuing the historical theme, you can be sure to find something of interest here if you look closer. Once called the ‘Great American Desert,’ this is the state with the country’s largest aquifer and a passionate and cult dedication to football. It was where Buffalo Bill held his first rodeo. If you’re looking for an awesome and unforgettable cowboy trail, this is the place to be without question.
These areas are likely to give you the best and most memorable experience, outside of the most visited and populated states in the US. I love seeing other places because without blogs like yours I’d never get to see the world. That picture at the top is gorgeous too, I always think, imagine sitting there and writing.
You’re right though too, because I know I still have so many beautiful places here in Ireland that I want to see, it’s just about getting myself out to actually see them!

It is such a varied place, especially since most Americans don’t get to visit it all.

Nebraska sounds like a place that would be right up my street! ? I have only visited Florida, Florida Keys, & Maine in the USA. I’ve got New Mexico, Arizona & Alaska currently on my bucket list ? New York City seemed to have been the “in” place to visit this year amongst my friends though ?

My brother and SIL once traveled to all the Meriden’s in the country because that was our hometown. Took them through Kansas and Iowa. Not states normally high on the “have to” visit list.
Me either, all I saw as I read this was corn. That would definitely take research on my part.
I have been to Alabama a few times for hiking trips. Wall of Jericho is a must-visit. It’s incredible.
Alaska and Hawaii on my list. If I would only hit the lottery!

Hmm, Georgia. I hadn’t really thought about it. I’m so hesitant to go somewhere more humid than NY. But then again, I’m sure the hospitality would make it lovely.
Actually, I’ve been to Georgia but that was to visit a peanut farmer who had become the President of America. Wish I had had the freedom to go to Savannah then. Now it means another trip to the US. lol.
Oh, how lucky you were to have met President Carter! I admire him. Another trip, especially now brings unwanted hassles.
