If you ask me on any normal day where is the last place I want to be in New York City, it would most definitely be Times Square. It isn’t because it isn’t pretty, bright, and totally overstimulating. It is because of all of those things and it is packed with tourists who are constantly looking up and have no intention of moving out of my way or moving at all.
So why did I purposely end up here on a Saturday, the busiest day of the week? It was to see the Valentine’s Day art display that is different every year in Duffy Square. This year’s art display is the Window To the Heart.
What Is The Idea Behind The Window To The Heart?
This year is very special, it’s the tenth anniversary, so they had to go big to fill that amazing space and celebrate love in a special way. The design team, ArandaLasch + Marcelo Coelho, created this piece which is made from a resin Fresnel lens, the largest in the world at 12 feet long.

It was 3-D printed and is etched with grooves that distort the image behind it bending colors and light. And in the middle, is a heart cut out to take that Valentine “USie”. It ended up winning the yearly competition, out of many submissions, to be placed in Times Square at the crossroads of the World for the month of February celebrating love in all of its forms.
Where is the Window To The Heart?
The art piece is located at Duffy Square between 46th and 47th street, near the red steps. It was unveiled on February 1st and will remain until the 28th. I would tell you to go on the weekdays instead of the weekend like I did because there is actually always a line of tourists waiting to take a picture with their sweethearts. But then again, that could be perfect if you are looking for a new boo and what a story that would be years from now!
Will you be going to Times Square to catch the Window to the Heart? Will be taking a Valentine’s Day “USie”? I’d love to see them! I don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day but you can inspire me for the future.
Until our next rendezvous…
XOXO
Trudy
This looks very cool. Celebrating unique art and love together is a reason to venture into a super touristy place. (And I agree with you about Times Square!)
Yea, sometimes the visit is a necessary evil…
That is such a cute piece!
I thought so too!
💜
Awesome what they can now do with 3D printing Trudy and well worth the visit to see it. I do wonder what they will be capable of producing by that system in another two decades. By then anyone with a computer might find them as cheap to buy as a laser printer is now. Imagine future space travel with a database of all the parts and a printer capable of manufacturing them as and when required. Stuff of Sci-fi not that many years ago really!
Wow! I hadn’t thought that far ahead. But it would be amazing to buy the blueprint for a space rocket and print it out at home, wouldn’t it? Very Jetson’s!
Be nifty for a new car too lol. I often wonder if technology follows sci-fi though. That gives ideas of wishful thinking that science has a go at. Imagine though, sending off probes to, say, Mars equipped with robots that assemble 3-D printed components for habitation and equipment.
Since it’s privatized in the US.. I’m not sure that anyone else besides SpaceX would be willing to sell those blueprints.
I feel a conspiracy theory futuristic novel idea forming !
I wasn’t even trying… You can make that happen!
Ha, ha, maybe not, but you provided a good prompt 🙂
I’m happy to give some inspiration in any form.
I’ve been that tourist – many years ago though 😀 Sadly I doubt I’ll ever get there again, too many other places to do.
It’s not sad actually that’s a good thing. You’ll get to see more of the authentic New York if you stay away from tourist traps.
What an amazing piece. I am still so overdue….need a visit!
I didn’t realize that this was a yearly thing until this year.
I just need to go to New York. Your blog paints a beautiful picture (and a delicious one, tbqh)
Thank you so much! This year, i want to show more, if possible.
