Short-term or Long-term Travel: What Should You Choose?

If you have ever traveled before, then you have probably thought about or wished to be able to do it for a longer time. There can be several reasons for this ranging from a reduction in stress/responsibilities to having new and exciting experiences that you can treasure as memories forever. However, long-term traveling is not for everyone, and sometimes short-term traveling can be just as rewarding, fun, and enjoyable. Here are a few things to consider if you are planning to travel soon, and are not sure whether you should pick a long-term or short-term trip.

Do you have other life commitments?

When it comes to choosing whether you would be better suited to long-term or short-term traveling, one of the biggest factors will come down to how many other life commitments you currently have, and how easy it would be to adapt these commitments into your travels. For example, if you are a young adult with no dependents, or pets that rely on you then you will be much more likely, and open to traveling long-term compared to somebody who has a family, pets, and house to uphold. While traveling with a family, or pets is still feasible, there are many more barriers, and considerations to consider. Therefore, short-term travel is often more accessible for those with many, or important commitments, and those with limited commitments can often travel for longer periods.

Have you considered your career?

Something that roots many people in one spot is their career. If you have a career that requires you to be available locally such as a store manager, then it is likely that short-term travel breaks will suit your lifestyle better. However, if you have applied for rn travel nurse jobs, then it could be that your work allows you to travel for longer periods. So, when you are trying to decide how long to travel for, think about your career, and how it fits in with your plans.

Do you have a list of places you want to travel to?

When it comes to traveling, some people know exactly where they want to go, and have many different destinations that they want to visit. If you are one of these kinds of people then you would probably suit long-term travel as there are a lot of places that you want to visit. If you have no ideas for travel locations to visit, then short-term travel is potentially a better choice for you.

Are you ok with change?

There is a slight difference between traveling and vacationing. If you are planning to travel then you need to be adaptable and ok with change. While going from place to place things that are out of your control may happen, and in these instances, you need to be able to go with the flow. If you find this way of living easy, then long-term travel should be no problem for you. However, if you struggle in these situations, you would be better off looking at short-term travel options.

There are many different goals, and objectives that people set themselves when it comes to traveling. Some do it to find themselves, others for work opportunities, and some for excitement and memories. Whatever your reason is, take these considerations on board so that you can determine whether long-term or short-term travel is better for you.

Are you lucky enough to be able to travel for a long period? Would you ever consider it as a lifestyle? Let’s continue this conversation in the comments below.

  1. How lovely to find a post from you today! You were one of the first I followed years ago. I don’t travel at all any more, but my daughter is in Singapore right now. Her photos of buildings and art installations are fantastic. Do you travel much these days?

    1. Hello Anne! Long time no see! Thank you so much for supporting me from the beginning, it matters a lot to me. Singapore sounds like a dream. I hope that she is enjoying it. I haven’t been traveling as much as I would like. I’m still little hesisitant.

What do you think? I would like to know.
